Solution! Outlook 2007 – none of the authentication methods supported by this client are supported by…

Have you run into a problem with your Outlook 2007 where you all of a sudden cannot send email? Does it give you this error message: “none of the authentication methods supported by this client are supported by your server”?

I had a client with this problem, and I was able to fix the problem. This may not work for everyone, but it did the trick in my case.

Open Outlook and…
1. Under the tool tab, go to Account Settings

2. Select the email account you are working on

3. On the Change Account screen verify that the email and server settings are correct according to your provider. (if you have not changed anything since it last worked, these should be fine.)

4. Click the button on the bottom right area More Settings

5. Click the Advanced tab

** THIS IS IMPORTANT!!! Most people do NOT use SSL for sending/ receiving email. This assumes you are NOT using it.

6. Outgoing (SMTP) port should be 25 or 26 (unless your email provider gave you something else which is not common)

7. Look for “Use the following type of encrypted connection” — or similar and select “NONE”

8. Click OK to save and close that dialog — Click Test Account Settings button to verify email can be sent and received — you should get no errors and test messages should go through.

9. OK and Finish to save and exit the accounts settings

10. Click Send and ReceiveĀ  to send any messages stuck in your Outbox… they should all go out now.

Wow, that was easy! Why did it do this in the first place? I didn’t change anything, it just stopped sending email.
